5. Try to have regular sleeping hours. Odd sleeping hours can flare-up all these problems.
6. Supplement your diet with lots of fresh fruits, vegetables, sprouts, and fruit juice.
7. In case of severe acne, consult the doctor.

Night routine for acne: Remove your make-up with a liquid make-up remover. Wash with soap and water and then apply an anti-pimple/acne cream.

Morning routine for acne: Wipe your face with an anti-acne lotion. Let this lotion dry naturally. If you do not want to use an acne lotion, use an astringent or rose water. Apply calamine lotion. This acts like a protective lotion.

ACNE CAUSES AND PRECAUTIONS

The appearence of blackheads or comedones, small cysts and scars is called acne. It is unwanted spot on neck, face, cheeks, forehead, back, shoulder and chest.

It occurs at Young or Teenage due to hormonal imbalance which takes place at the onset of puberty.

When human adolescence begins, the activity of glands increases which causes the sebaceous glands to secrete a larger amount of oil which lubricates the skin and this clogs the pores causing acne. A person should wash his face regularly with plain water about 4-5 times a day.

Factors making acne worse are:

  • Environmental irritants such as pollution and high humidity makes the condition worse.
  • Change of hormone levels in adolescent girls and adult women two to seven days before their menstrual period starts.
  • Friction caused by leaning or rubbing the skin.
  • Hard scrubbing of skin.

Who suffers from acne?

People of all races and ages get the acnes but it is most common in teenagers. This problem reduces when the person is their mid 30’s

Precautions for acne are:

Pastry food and Chocolates, high starch and fatty food and dried food, seafood, spicy food, soft drinks should be avoided

Avoid whole milk.Skimmed milk should be taken instead. Intake of sugar should be minimized.

Reduce Intake of salt . Junk food and consumption of fats must be avoided. You should also avoid the foods having high content of trans-fatty acid. Reduce the intake of food which has iodine. Intake of juices should be more. Cucumber juice is good and should be taken daily.

You should clear the skin properly: The persons suffering from acne should wash their face two to three times a day with a mild cleanser.

Acne patients are prone to sunburn which redness the skin and makes blemishes less visible and makes the skin dry. Oil free cosmetics should be applied.

Ayurvedic and home remedies for Acne

It is seen that many a times, Conventional treatments do not work and worsen those acne, scars & inflammations. Here is a list of many home remedies for acne that you can try conveniently any time without upsetting routine. To get rid of acne and maintain a healthy skin, these home remedies are very useful.

  • Widely known, Hot wet towel compresses are the best treatment for localized infections, as heat dilates blood vessels, followed by a cold compress, which has the opposite effect.
  • Our body has its own self cleansing, self-purifying systems: keeping these systems working in perfect order is the best way of protecting yourself from toxicity. Drink 7-8 glasses of water a day. 10 glasses would be optimal, but if your anything like me its sometimes tough to get in the 8 glasses. Remember your skin is the largest organ of your body and is the first to lose moisture and become dehydrated.
  • Drink Herbal Water : It is made by boiling hair of 1 corn, with 1 to 2 fenugreek seeds in a glass full of water.
  • Almond Oil is good acne home remedy for dryness & inflammation of the skin. The outer cover (endocarp) of 2-3 can be ground with water & applied over the face daily. This is good for removing scars of old pimples.
  • Fresh juice of apricots applied on your face is very good for sunburn, itching, exzema and natural cystic acne treatment.
  • Application of Bengal Gram Powder (flour) mixed with curds is also a very effective treatment for pimples & other skin infections & allergies. Green Gram powder flour, mixed in water or glycerine is an excellent face wash in place of soap to remove dirt without skin irritation, and also a very effective bleach for a good complexion.
  • Cucumber Juice alone or mixed with juices of carrot, lettuce or alfalfa when applied over the face is excellent home remedy for pimples. Grated cucumber can also serve the same purpose.
  • Curd or buttermilk is good for skin irritation. Curds along with wheat flour or bran is a good cleanser and beneficial for dry skin.

Woman's Guide to Coping with Acne at Any Age

Woman's Guide to Coping with Acne at Any Age
by Tina Alster, M.D. and Dr. Tina Alster

Book Description
An essential and comprehensive guide to acne for women of all ages
Acne is no longer just a teenage affliction. In fact, dermatologists often refer to it as a woman's disease, and drugstore shelves are filled with acne products specifically geared toward adult women. But how do you choose from the overwhelming selection of treatments? Which products are appropriate to use as you grow older, become pregnant, or enter menopause? How can you work with a dermatologist to get the most out of prescription acne medications?
Lydia Preston answers all of these questions and more, with up-to-date information drawn from her years of reporting on dermatology, as well as her own long personal experience with acne. In Breaking Out, she shares the wisdom of dozens of doctors and scientists who have devoted their careers to studying and treating acne, including:
· Guidelines for buying and using over-the-counter products
· Treatment for acne scars
· Emergency acne remedies and camouflage tips
· Alternative treatments, including herbal remedies, acupuncture, dietary approaches, and ways to unlock the mind-skin connection
No one has to live with acne or its consequences. Breaking Out is an invaluable guide to understanding and combating acne that women of all ages can turn to with confidence. Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
Introduction
by Tina Alster, M.D.
Acne is an elusive and resourceful foe. It is stubborn, with a remarkable ability to shrug off the most aggressive medical treatments. It is unpredictable, adept at appearing or disappearing without rhyme or reason. And it is malicious, capable of inflicting terrible damage in the form of physical scars that disfigure the face and emotional wounds that lacerate the psyche.
Most of the women who come to my office with acne or acne scarring have spent years battling this tenacious adversary. They are fed up with embarrassing breakouts and with remedies that haven't worked for them. Many are devastated by the facial scarring that confronts them each time they look into a mirror or catch sight of their reflection in a store window. And they all are sick and tired of waiting for it to just go away. Even though adult acne is a common phenomenon, with as many as half of all women experiencing at least occasional flare-ups, most of my female acne patients can scarcely believe that they are still breaking out in their twenties and thirties, let alone their forties and fifties!
A few years ago, writer Lydia Preston was one of these patients -- frustrated by years of fighting acne, and desperately unhappy about the scars on her face. These were experiences that she soon drew on when, after undergoing several surgical procedures to repair the scars, she collaborated with me on a book about my specialty, cosmetic laser surgery. I can safely say I have never met a journalist or researcher who became more thoroughly immersed in any subject.
Lydia spent hours watching me and the other dermatologists in my office at work -- and then spent many more hours grilling each of us about what she had observed. She interviewed my nurses and aestheticians -- and even my office manager. She pored over medical journals and textbooks. She attended dermatology meetings to hear other specialists lecture. And she sat down for long, heart-to-heart conversations with dozens of my patients -- many of them other acne sufferers -- gaining the kind of insight into their emotional and practical concerns that busy physicians rarely have the time to explore.
It is clear that she has brought the same dedication and passion for detail to this book about acne in women. As any dermatologist will instantly recognize from the names cited in the text, she has interviewed many of the world's leading acne experts -- true giants of dermatology, whose research constitutes the foundation for modern acne treatment. She has similarly sought out renowned authorities on acne scarring and scar treatment, on cosmetics and cosmetic chemistry, on alternative therapies, and on the psychological ramifications of skin disease.
The result is a uniquely comprehensive examination of the myriad complexities of acne and the confusing welter of treatment options. The book's exceptionally clear explanations of how acne occurs and how different remedies work or don't work to eliminate acne should come as a revelation to anyone frustrated by years of persistent treatment failure. It will certainly be a source of reassurance and wisdom to which any woman can turn with confidence at any time when an acne outbreak occurs -- whether she is exasperated by periodic flares or heartsick over disfiguring cysts or scars.
How do you sort through the hundreds of competing over-the-counter acne preparations that now crowd drugstore, supermarket, and department store shelves to zero in on the handful that are likely to be most effective for you? How do you avoid things that make acne worse? How can you work with a dermatologist to get the most out of prescription acne medicines? Treatments frequently fail simply because patients are not fully informed about how to use them correctly. What can you do to ensure that your medicines will work as they are supposed to? How will you cope with any side effects that may occur? And what steps do you take if your condition changes, as acne-prone skin inevitably does with age, or the hormonal shifts of pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, or any of a dozen other reasons?
What about acne scarring? Even very mild or occasional breakouts have the potential to leave permanent scars, and despite numerous exciting innovations in dermatologic surgery, these mutilating rents in the fabric of the skin remain among the most daunting challenges that face any cosmetic surgeon. In many instances, the most effective techniques are also the riskiest ones. How do you weigh the relative risks and benefits? How do you find a qualified practitioner who will employ the best and safest methods for your skin type -- and for the types of scars you have?
Finally, how do you heal the inner scars of acne? Countless studies testify to its damaging emotional impact. How does any woman get past those feelings to get over acne once and for all and move on with her life?
Breaking Out addresses those questions, and many more, with information drawn from Lydia's own experience with acne and the toll it takes, her years of reporting on dermatology, and her sympathetic exploration into other patients' concerns. I know it will be invaluable to all of my acne patients, and I look forward to recommending it to them.
Dr. Tina Alster, clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University, is director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery and consulting dermatologist for Lancôme, luxury products division of L'Oréal USA, Inc.

Acne all my life5
People are different and I have tried all of the popular methods to cure my acne and all were mainly chemical. Like Murad and Proactive, also everything the dermo prescribed. And it would all work for a week and then my skin was awful again. Or it would destroy my skin. If chemicals haven't been working for you try natural and try Lush!!

My routine
Fresh Farmacy
Tea tree water
Enzymion moisturizer
Ocean salt couple times a week.

The farmacy soap is drying but followed with the other products that goes away fast. Also the soap is good for spot treatment! This has saved my skin. I look like a new person and everyone I know has complimented me on how different I look. This routine has changed my skin. Wanted to pass along the info.
10 stars if I could do it.

A Weird and Wonderful Little Cleanser5
The smell is less than fantastic, but Fresh Farmacy is the ideal remedy for skin with ANY problems. I've been a longtime devotee of Lush, and I received a sample of it with an order last year. I used it to wash my face and was amazed by how well it cleaned - and calmed - my dry, eczema-prone skin. Initially the texture and smell of the bar turned me off, but I'll never doubt this little bar of goodness ever again! Combine it with Ocean Salt scrub a few times a week for obscenely soft and glowing skin. Thank you, Lush!

Not a miracle, but still nice.4
I have moderate acne and I used my entire bar of Fresh Farmacy. This was no miracle; I still have acne. But what I loved is that as soon as I used FF my skin felt clean and soft. It didn't prevent my acne from occuring, but it did calm the acne that I had and made it less red. I would suggest rinsing well after you wash your face with FF so that there is no residue left on your skin. So far, this has worked best for me! :)

Yoga for Acne

Apart from various medications and herbal therapies to cure acne there are also some other cures such as yoga that may give benefit in Acne and may cure also.

.
Your face will become bright and radiant who practices certain types of Yogic Asanas.

Yoga can help you by increasing the blood flow to your face. It helps in flushing away the toxins and provides nutrients to your skin. It is important to avoid constipation to keep the metabolism in the correct working condition. To get the best results along with it, you will have to change your eating habits for better. Yoga suggests the use of healthy Indian spices like turmeric and coriander which are natural antibiotics, rather than chili powder, which can cause burning in the stomach.

If you are suffering from acne, you must practice yoga for an hour daily. Your session should include the standing forward bending postures and inverted postures followed by ten minutes of deep relaxation in the supine posture.

Understanding and thereon practicing the concepts of yoga help one to move towards a balanced functioning of mind which paves the way for production of healthy chemicals, disruption of which is the root cause of acne.

To practice effective acne treating yoga, learning the supine posture is a must. Here is how you can go about it:

1) Lie on your back and place your hands beside your body. Your legs should be straight.
2) Using your elbows raise the chest far enough from the floor so that top of the head rests on the floor.
3) Place your left foot (heel) on the right thigh, close to the hip joint. Do the same with your right foot (heel) on the left thigh. Hold your feet firmly with your hands.
4) Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth.
5) Stay in the position for a minute and return back to normal.
6) You may repeat the process again.

Deep relaxation in the supine posture is a very beneficial yoga technique, which has its effects on the mind and the body. It deepens the breath, relaxes the digestive system and promotes concentration. The basic problem behind acne is concentration of wastes inside the body, which start exhibiting outside in the form of acne. Yoga helps your body to get rid of that unwanted waste. After a practice of 3 or 4 months (preferably before sunrise) your face will definety becomes bright and radiant. Yoga improves your Aura also.

So get a good yoga teacher and practice daily for improvement of your health and vigour.

Is ACNE LASER TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR YOU ?

The women from time immemorial are proud of their beauty. They feel insecure if their face is laced with Acne, Pimple and other spots on her face. Women with spotless face are admired by one and all.

If there are acne, women afraid of exposing their faces to sunlight. And they feel shy to show their faces in day time also. But now light is being used to cure their Acne i.e. by laser light or laser beam or any other name you call it.

Lasers used in treatments are described as "emitting laser pulses" to create measured damage to the second layer of acne-scarred skin in order to induce the body's formation of new collagen cells that will fill in the space of atrophic scars ("Lasers Get under the," 2005, p. 35)

Laser Resurfacing or "Lasering" was actually discovered by accident, says Richard Felten, a senior reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) "In the course of treating the acne with scars with a laser, surgeons noticed that after resurfacing the skin around the scar to make the scar less visible, small adjacent wrinkles were greatly diminished."(Greeley, 2000, p. 34)

The process of laser resurfacing involves a controlled "burning" procedure where a laser is used to "vaporize" top layers of facial skin. This eliminates wrinkles and lines caused by sun damage and facial expressions as well as remove acne scars. Burning of old skin produces a fresh surface for new skin to grow. (Greeley, 2000, p. 34)

Noted Plast Surgeion and President of the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Dr. Stephen Perkins describes laser treatment as "very appealing to people." The opportunity of freshening up the skin's surface as well as getting more youthful, non sun-damaged skin is something which most people would like to have, he further states. (Greeley, 2000, p. 34)

Laser treatments are not for everyone however, Perkins cautions.

But read what experts and specialists in this field says:

"Certain people with very sensitive skin cannot tolerate the medications and lubricants used on the skin during healing." (Greeley, 2000, p. 34) He further adds that people from darker skinned ethnic groups may also experience problems as laser treatments can alter the color of skin in rather dramatic and unpredictable ways.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Tina Alster of the Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington also advises people about thinking of laser treatments as easy. She says potential patients must be prepared for a period of recuperation where they may experience bruising and swelling.

"They will have a crusty, oozy, bruised, scabbed, raw-appearing face," she says. In addition to this, patients should not expect completely unlined and unscarred skin. "I can't deliver that," she says. "I am not able to give unlined, unscarred skin." Patients, however, can expect a 50 percent or greater improvement. (Greeley, 2000, p. 34)

Prolonged redness of skin, tenderness, easy flushing and changes in the skin's pigmentation or hyper-pigmentation are just a few of the possible side-effects of laser treatments according to Dr. Rox Anderson, director of the Laser Center at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. (Greeley, 2000, p. 34)

Patients are also advised to make sure of their treating physician's credentials.

In 2005, 60 women filed suit against London surgeon Fayez Abu Mahfouz for leaving them with burned and scarred faces after they're been treated with laser for various skin problems.("60 Patients to Sue," 2005, p. 9)

Of this Dr Perkins blames unscrupulous manufacturers of lasers who puts profit over making sure that buyers of their product are sufficiently trained to operate such devices. There are also equally unscrupulous and unqualified doctors and cosmetologists who are quick to take advantage of the high prices patients are willing to pay to have their skin problems treated. In some states in the United States like New York and Tennessee, operators of laser tools are not required to have medical degrees.

Potential patients should also keep in mind that skin abrasion whether done with the use of chemicals, abrasive materials or laser basically removes one or more layers of skin which can be painful and cause skin flushing, swelling and in some cases, scarring ("Laser Facts", 2002)

Having read the opinions, as above decide yourself, whether Acne is suitable for your skin or not also.

DOG - A wonderful creation of God.

Dog is a most wonderful creation of God. It is a most faithful animal being in this universe. It gives you unending love and affection. It does not bother whether you love her or not, but she continues to love you until her last breath.

To many of us an animal is a best friend. A pet can be a valued companion and quite often just like a member of the family. People choose all sorts of animals as pets. So whether your pet is a cat, dog, fish, hamster, snake, spider, ferret, or other animal your pet is very important to you.

But out of all these animals Dog’s companion can be held in high esteem.

You cannot blindly believe any abody even your siblings, friends, relatives or your spouse. But you can believe her blindly.

Sometimes you may leave her outside your house to guard and throw some bread and butter to her. All the night she may be guarding you and your loved ones in that bitting cold or with mosquito bites. But when your open your door it may jump on you licking whole your body with love affection.

A case I have seen of my relative, who has a Dog whom he looks very affectionately. He died normally at his age of 65, but that Dog didn’t take any food for many days and sitting and weeping for him and that too died after four months. This moved many people. I think there are like these cases in this world.

Even in Mahabharata, a Great Hindu Mythological Epic, at the end when Pandavas are journeying towards Heaven, a Dog accompanied them. But when Pandavas are being taken to heaven, then the elder of all Pandavas, Yudhistar insisted that Dog also must be taken to Heaven.

This shows how much importance was given to this wonderful Pet during those days.

Nowadays Dogs are doing wonderful jobs in Police and Army.

Dibetes breakthrough - Cure diabetes naturally

Cure Diabetics naturally says Mark Anastasi of England through his E book.

    He says that

    Dear friend,

Are you sick and tired of...

    • Constantly having to monitor what you eat, and not being able to enjoy a normal meal or night out with your friends?

    • Having to bring along your own “special” meal to parties and gatherings?

    • Taking four or more injections a day every day of your life, until no part of you is left un-bruised?

    • Living with the fear that one day, chances are you will experience neurological challenges, cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure, kidney problems, liver failure, eyesight challenges, impotence, amputations…

    • Being overweight and being unable to change that, no matter how hard you try?

    • Your partner having to put up with years of anger, depression, ill-health, lack of spontaneity?

    • Hearing doctor after doctor tell you they haven’t got a clue as to what triggered the disease or what portion or your pancreas is still functioning?

    • If you’re a woman, knowing that you might never be able to have a child, as it could be too taxing on your tired body?

    • Feeling like there’s no hope, no cure, and that you are condemned to live with Diabetes for the rest of your life?

If you've had ENOUGH, then this will be the most important letter you'll ever read.

    Here's why.

I’m writing you today because I want to tell you about a breakthrough scientific discovery about Diabetes. If you read it… I promise you'll be immensely rewarded. If you fully understand it, you won't want to miss a single day of your life without it.

    Let me explain...

There is new research out for people with Diabetes… that has helped hundreds of people like you slowly… but very effectively… reduce their blood sugar levels.

What are the advantages of that?

    - When your blood sugar is lower, it means your body produces more insulin (and this is crucial – more on this in a moment). Most importantly, it means you need less insulin shots or “units”.

    - It also means that your Diabetes condition is improving. This means you are slowly decreasing the risk factors of Diabetes, like eye damage, kidney problems or even amputations.

    - But most importantly, it means your body is slowly learning to produce insulin on its own again… and for some people, this has “cured” their Diabetes completely.

How is that possible, you ask?

“I thought Diabetes couldn’t be cured?”

    You’re right. At least, partially.

With traditional medicine, yes, Diabetes can never be cured. Traditional medicine “fights” Diabetes by injecting insulin into your bloodstream to digest your food into energy. When you don’t have enough insulin in your body, your blood sugars shoot up… but because your body can’t process them it can’t “feed itself”.

This is why Diabetes patients who haven’t been diagnosed yet are often very hungry and thirsty even after a meal (sound familiar?)

But let’s say that your body would produce more insulin on it’s own. What if there was a way to “stimulate” the organ that produces your insulin… to slowly but surely produce a little more on its own each day?

Scientists have now discovered... that it can!

FIFTY INVENTIONS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD

There is a great article in TIMES OF INDIA (Mumba) regarding inventions that changed the world: Read for knowledge and fun:

Since time immemorial, thousands of inventions by man have gone on to transform the world. Here is a list of 50 (in alphabetical order) that may have played a bigger part than most:

    /photo.cms?msid=2550957

    Abacus- 190 AD

Use of the abacus, with its beads in a rack, was first documented in China in about 190 AD. The Chinese version was the speediest way to do sums for centuries and, in the right hands, can still outpace electronic calculators.

    Aspirin- 1899

Little tablets of acetylsalicylic acid have probably cured more minor ills than any other medicine. Hippocrates was the first to realise the healing power of the substance. At the turn-of-the-century, German chemist Felix Hoffman perfected the remedy.

    Barbed wire- 1873

The world's most divisive invention was conceived not to keep people in or out, but cows.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550958

    Barcode- 1973

Barcodes were conceived as a kind of visual Morse code by a Philadelphia student in 1952. Now, black stripes have appeared on almost everything we buy.

    Battery- 1800

In 1780s, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani discovered that a dead frog's leg would twitch when he touched it with two pieces of metal. His friend, professor Alessandro Volta made the first battery which were voltaic cells stacked in a Voltaic pile.

    E

    /photo.cms?msid=2550960

    Bicycle- 1861

First devised as a gentleman’s plaything in the 1820s, the push-powered hobby-horse quickly evolved to become the most classless form of transport.

    Bra- 1913

New York socialite Mary Phelps Jacob is widely considered to be the inventor of the modern bra, which she devised as an alternative to unsightly corsets.

    Button- 1235

Ancient Greeks fastened tunics using crude buttons and loops, but it took the buttonhole to popularise the little discs of perforated plastic that adorn our clothes today.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550963

    /photo.cms?msid=2550963

    Condom- 1640

Egyptians donned them 3,000 years ago and the 16th-century Italian gynaecologist Gabriele Falloppio first advocated their use to prevent the spread of disease.

    Fridge- 1834

Jacob Perkins was the first to describe how pipes filled with volatile chemicals whose molecules evaporated very easily could keep food cool.

    Gun- 14th century

Gunpowder led to the creation of the cannon in the 13th century. The biggest step that led to the modern gun was Smith and Wesson’s metal-cased cartridge, first fired in 1857.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550964

    Internal combustion engine- 1859

Credit for the first working internal combustion engine goes to the Belgian inventor Étienne Lenoir, who converted a steam engine in 1859. It spawned the billions of engines that have been built since.

    Laser- 1960

Physicist Theodore Maiman built the first working laser in 1960. His device was based around a ruby crystal that emitted light "brighter than the centre of the sun".

    /photo.cms?msid=2550965

    Light bulb- 1848

Joseph Swan in fact developed a bulb before Edison, but the pair later joined forces and today share credit for creating the gadget we perhaps take for granted more than any other.

    Locks- 2000 BC

Egyptians were the first to put things under lock and key about 4,000 years ago .

    Microchip- 1958

US engineer Jack Kilby built the world's first monolithic integrated circuit, or microchip that changed the world of computing.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550966

    Mobile phone- 1947

The first mobile phone service was introduced by Bell Laboratories in Missouri in 1947.

    Paper- 105 AD

The Chinese began using bark, bamboo fibres, hemp and flax to mill the first reams almost 2,000 years ago, but it took centuries for paper to envelop the world.

    PC- 1977

Steve Jobs, whose Apple II, launched in 1977, was the first consumer PC to resemble the machines that went on to transform our lives.

    Printing press- 1454

The Chinese were the world's first printers – they practised block printing as early as 500 AD – but a German goldsmith called Johannes Gutenberg was the first to construct a press.

    Radio- 1895

Alexander Popov, a Russian, and the Italian-Irish inventor Guglielmo Marconi, separately sent and received the first radio waves. Marconi sent the first transatlantic radio message (three dots for the letter 'S') in 1901.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550971

    Telephone- 1876

Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell raced to make the first working phone in the 1870s, Bell winning in a photo-finish.

    Television- 1925

Scotsman John Logie Baird first demonstrated TV to the public in 1925.

    he internet- 1969

Conceived by the US Department of Defense in the 1960s, the internet, together with the World Wide Web, invented in 1989 by Brit techie, Tim Berners-Lee, has shrunk the world like no other invention.

    The Match- 1826

The Stockholm-based chemist John Walker was the first to discover that when a stick coated in potassium chlorate and antimony sulphide was brushed across stone, it created a flame.

    The Pill- 1951

The contraceptive pill was developed by a team headed by Carl Djerassi, a chemist, in 1951, but wasn't marketed in the UK until 1962.

    /photo.cms?msid=2550984

    Wheel- 3500 BC

The wheel surely deserves a place near the top of any "greatest inventions" list. The earliest evidence of a wheel – a pictograph from Sumeria (modern day Iraq) – dates back to 3500 BC; the device rolled West soon after that.

    Zip- 1913

Credit for the device's invention goes to Gideon Sundback. In 1913, the Swedish engineer made the first modern zip to fasten high boots.

    Honourable mentions:

Bow and arrow- 30,000 BC, CD- 1965, Cardiac pacemaker- 1958, Credit card- 1950, Drum- 12,000 BC, Dynamite- 1867, Fish hook- 30,000 BC, GPS- 1978, iPod- 2001, Kettle- 1891, Microscope- 1590, Plough- AD 100, Rubber band- 1845, Sewing machine- 1830, Spectacles- 1451, Syringe- 1844, Telescope- 1608, Umbrell- 2400 BC, Walkman- 1979, Weighing scales- 5000 BC.

You can retain your same mobile number

As per report of Economic Times in today dated 13-11-2007, Govt of India will introduce Number Portability in Four Metros Soon. The details of report are as follows:

NEW DELHI: Come 2008, you will be able to retain your number even if you were to change your mobile operator. Communications minister A Raja on Monday announced that the government had approved the introduction of mobile number portability (MNP), which gives cellphone users the freedom to choose their service provider while retaining their numbers.

“We will first introduce number portability in the four metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. In the next phase, it will be extended to more parts of the country. The modalities will be announced after due consultations with Trai,” Mr Raja said.

Market surveys have shown that up to 50% of all mobile users in India are unhappy with their operator, and are willing to switch to another service provider if allowed to retain their number. Number portability has so far been introduced in Australia, Korea, Japan, Canada, the US, the UK, most of Europe and Pakistan, among other countries.

According to reports, its introduction has been followed by up to 50% subscribers switching operators in some of these countries. Though Trai has been pushing for number portability since March 2006, the recent tariff hikes by some service providers despite stiff opposition from the regulator and telecom minister A Raja acted as the final trigger for DoT to approve the introduction of MNP and set the process in motion, sources said. Immediately after the recent round of tariff hikes, ET had first reported that the government was set to introduce number portability.

Even as CDMA-based operators welcomed DoT’s move and said the introduction of MNP was an important tool for ensuring competition and improved quality of services, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the body representing GSM players said the “industry felt MNP was being introduced to benefit a select operator desirous of entering the GSM segment and thereafter poaching on the subscribers of existing GSM players.”

While COAI’s director general TV Ramachandran refused to name this “select operator”, it is understood that he was referring to Reliance Communications, which had recently obtained the government’s approval to offer GSM services. He also demanded that this facility be extended to all fixed line customers.

The DoT’s move is in line with the recommendations of telecom regulator Trai. DoT, in a statement, said all mobile operators, through a neutral third party, shall establish a “logically centralised database, the cost of which would be borne proportionately by the telcos.”

This implies, a telecom company that has 20% market share in the circle, will bear 20% of the cost of creating the centralised data base. All that the customer has to do is approach the recipient operator for porting the number, the DoT said.

The DoT also clarified that cost of upgrading the mobile networks to allow number portability would be borne by the operators. Issues related to tariffs will be decided by Trai after “consultations and also considering the cost aspects of different solutions,” DoT added.

The introduction of MNP will result in a significant churn in the telecom market and is likely to impact incumbents and well-entrenched bigger players the most.

MNP is likely to hit the bottomlines of all operators as its implementation will increase the costs of retaining one’s subscribers. Service providers may be forced to introduce a series of incentivised schemes to tie down their subscribers.
